Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife
It is also known as the Casa Lercaro Site, originally united in the task of explaining human nature. Though the disciplines later took separate paths—one to interpret the past, the other the present—they now come together once again in an effort to understand a society that, having undergone rapid transformation in recent decades, seeks to reconcile its past with its historical trajectory.
The Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife thus responds to current trends of collaboration between the two disciplines—both in the field of knowledge and within the specific domain of museology.
From this perspective, the museum aims to offer, through its collections, exhibitions, and activities, a broader and richer vision of the history and culture of the island of Tenerife.
Acknowledging the existence of diverse interpretations of the past and the role of collective memory in contemporary identity processes, the museum moves away from essentialist views of culture to highlight the complex and dynamic nature of social expressions and practices—both past and present. Sensitive to ideological plurality and committed to fostering democratic culture, it seeks to be a space for social integration and intercultural dialogue, using the island’s historical and ethnographic heritage as its main point of reference.
The museum operates two locations in La Laguna: one in the town center and another in Valle de Guerra. Both offer an engaging exhibition program and a wide range of coordinated cultural and educational activities. Through its collections, exhibitions, and events, the museum contributes to ensuring that both locals and visitors do not experience the present as a rupture or a gulf between tradition and modernity.
